Rice to end world hunger

The Japanese, known for their health and long lifespan, use rice as a staple in their diet. However, using white rice as a staple can cause a deficiency in thiamin (B1) and thus beri beri. Most americans are not at risk for beri beri and i eat B vitamins regularly, but brown rice does add alot of that fiber that i need to stay full. The initial retaliation against brown rice is its taste. in third world countries, they prefer white rice because they can eat alot of it easier (its the only thing they have, and they need the calories). It it is not as tastey as some things, i agree.

but here is the trick (from turkey)

fry it in a small ammount of olive oil first, which adds only a small ammount of healthy fat to the meal (and gets you fuller quicker!). this helps you absorb and taste the fat soluble flavors in the rice. Then boil the rice as normal. i usually cook it for an extra 20 minutes after what it says on the bag, because it is just so tough.

rice by itself is not a meal. here is how to make it even more powerful!

add steamed brocoli and carrots. maybe some onions, mushrooms, peas, whatever is in your refrigerator. but brocoli is a must. Steam them in a pan with a few tablespoons of water, and WITH A LID. this helps keep the watersoluble nutrients from evaporating. This should cook very fast, a few minutes tops. When they are soft enough to stab with a fork and chew is just right. This is actually called blanching in the food processing buisiness (what they do before they freeze them) and brings out the vibrant colors in the vegetables.

mix in the rice with the vegetables for a few minutes then it is ready to eat. Sometimes i add soysauce. i always add aton of salt. i am not worried about hypertension, but those who are should not do this!

Finnaly, serve it with green/black tea, red wine (muscadine is my new fav), or milk.

**note: this meal has NO PROTEIN. add beans, a salad with nuts, or drink with milk if you do not get adequate protein from the meals in the rest of the day. Remember, you need .8g per kg of body weight per day!

Cookies to end world hunger

cookies do not seem like the first thing you would reach for when trying to live healthy. which is why they were the first thing i picked. cookies are great. breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, on the go, in the car, in your backpack. Cookies look pretty normal. If someone sees you eating a cookie, they dont automatically think "wacky health nut." If someone asks you "what are you doing?" and you say "baking cookies" you seem delightfully domestic. But these are not your grandmas cookies. These cookies are hard core dynamite bombs that can satiate the most stubborn of hunger attacks. And to me, they taste awesome.

ingrediants:
3/4 cup whole wheat flower
3/4 cup oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
4 egg whites
one thing of applesauce
tbsp baking powder
vanilla, cinamon, craisins, walnuts (to taste)
ive also substituted apples for craisins with mild success
chocolate chip cookies taste horrible

mix, bake at 375 until awkwardly brown but not burnt
freeze

these cookies are hard at the initial bite but not too hard to chew (after having been frozen).
not only do they feel satisfying to chew, because of the texture, but are VERY filling. 2 or 3 cookies, having only 200 or 300 calories, can fill you up as much as a 500 or 600 calorie bowl of ice cream, or 2 300 calorie tv dinners. IMPRESSIVE!!

Recipes to end world hunger

"or the world of hunger in my belly"

an introduction.

I have eaten a box of cereal dry and still been hungry. I have eaten whole boxes of granola bars, canisters of mixed nuts, bags of chips, jars of salsa, and still not felt full. I have eaten chinese food and icecream for breakfast. together. i have no regard for taste. i eat for volume. This is dangerous, because the calories add up if the things you are eating are oreos or pizza.

The following recipes are those that have successfully satiated my hunger with a small volume of food. they usually involve whole grains, fruit, and vegetable. In my own diet planning, i do not count calories from fruit and vegetables as an incentive to eat more of them. I am 5'2, 110 Lbs. I would say that this lifestyle is at least moderatley succesful. And it IS a lifestyle.
